For the school year of 2014-2015, Devin has decided to attend public high school. He is taking the following courses:
- Pre AP/Honors Geometry - Emphasis will be placed on an abstract and formal approach to the study of geometry which includes topics such as properties of plane and solid figures; deductive methods of reasoning and use of logic; geometry as an axiomatic system including the study of postulates, theorems, and formal proofs; rules of congruence, similarity, parallelism, and perpendicularity; and rules of angle measurement in triangles, including trigonometry, coordinate geometry, and transformation geometry.
- Pre AP/Honors English I Composition and Literature - The first in the sequence of courses leading to Advanced Placement English Language and English Literature. Students will learn researched based strategies to improve their reading comprehension, develop skills to determine the authors' intent and theme, and recognize the techniques employed by the author. Students will write persuasive and critical thematic essays and compositions and a research paper.
- Pre AP/Honors New Mexico History - This one semester course will provide students with a more in-depth knowledge and awareness of the historical cultural, economic, and political history of New Mexico and its geographical connections. Students will also analyze the role that New Mexico plays in national and international arenas. This course will enhance students' ability to analyze historical evidence, and the ability to express historical understanding and analysis in writing.
- Health Education - This one semester course provides knowledge and skills practice in a variety of health topics including the six CDC health risk behaviors.
- Pre AP/Honors Integrated Science - This course is designed to teach the problem-solving skills needed for advanced study in physics and chemistry at the high school level. The topics will be presented with a technical, mathematical, and experimental approach designed for the serious science-motivated student. (He is currently taking Biology for his second semester.)
- Introduction to Engineering Design - Students will be provided with the tools, knowledge and history of the engineering design process. Students will also have the opportunity to develop skills and understanding of science and mathematical concepts fundamental for engineering and engineering related fields.
- Spanish I - The students will be provided with experiences in speaking, reading, writing and in listening comprehension. Students will develop an appreciation and understanding of the Spanish culture and language. Students must converse in Spanish as they acquire the language.
- Career Exploration - This course provides an overview of multiple career and technical pathway opportunities for Freshman. Students will cycle through multiple career and technical pathways throughout the school year, including Environmental and Alternative Energy, Sports Medicine, Hospitality and Tourism, Animal/Veterinary Technology, Forensics, and Global Travel.
- Physical Education - This course provides instruction and development of skills in human movement, physical activities, and physical fitness. Students will gain knowledge of different fitness activities, about anatomy, cardiovascular and muscular fitness. Students will be introduced to a variety of individual and dual sports along with team sports and lifelong activities, and gain a basic knowledge of different principals and methods to lead an active lifestyle.
