Ava: 4th Grade


For the 2015-2016 school year, Ava will be using the following materials:


Math

  • Singapore Primary Mathematics Standards Edition 4A/B - Over the past twenty years, the Primary Mathematics series has been identified with excellence and achievement in Singapore's primary school mathematics curriculum, culminating in Singapore students' success in the 1995, 1999, and 2003 TIMSS studies. The Standards Edition is an adaptation of this series to meet the Mathematics Contents Standards for California Public Schools. (Scope and Sequence)


Language Arts

  • Michael Clay Thompson's Language Arts Curriculum: Town Level - The grammar portion continues in an increasingly sophisticated manner concepts of parts of speech, parts of sentences, phrases, and clauses, and utilizes a four-level analysis technique to work through 100 sentences spread out over the school year. Vocabulary study introduces Latin stems as the basis for much of the English and Spanish languages. Writing provides a comprehensive introduction to the paragraph. Poetry topics covered will include topics such as alliteration, assonance, consonance, end rhyme, rhyme scheme, internal rhyme, eye-rhyme, foot, iamb, trochee, anapest, dactyl, spondee, sonnet, ballad, rime royal, limerick, simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, and endstopped/enjambed.   • Story Grammar for Elementary School - Using sentences from more than one hundred popular stories and novels as models, Story Grammar for Elementary School offers extensive practice in four sentence-manipulating techniques: sentence unscrambling, sentence imitating, sentence combining, and sentence expanding.   • All About Spelling Level 5 - AAS is a mastery based, multisensory program that combines the use of letter tiles, flash cards, word banks, spelling lists, and dictation exercises to introduce phonograms, suffixes, contractions, and other spelling rules. (Sample)



History

  • History Odyssey: Modern Times (Level 1) - This series presents history chronologically and includes reading and writing assignments, map work, and numerous hands-on activities. This year's focus of study is on the Modern time period, ranging from 1850 to present. (Sample)


Science


Foreign Language

  • Easy Spanish Step-By-Step - "Building-block" approach to mastering essential grammar, verbs, and vocabulary with down-to-earth explanations of important rules and concepts.


Logic

  • Logic Lift-Off - Presents exercises in logical reasoning, including relationships, analogies, syllogisms, sequences, deductive reasoning, inference, truth-values, and logical notation.
  • One Hour Mysteries - Five motivating mysteries solved by analyzing clues found at a "crime scene." Skills include deductive reasoning, inferring, taking notes, organizing data, and analyzing evidence.


Art and Music

  • Artistic Pursuits, Early Elementary K-3, Book 3 - Using tasteful works to introduce modern art movements like Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, and Expressionism, this book explores ideas that help students understand why modern art looks so different from earlier works and guides them to create meaningful art from their own experiences and ideas. This book provides lessons for the completion of twenty-four finished two-dimensional works on paper and twelve three-dimensional sculptures.
  • Hoffman Academy -Well-rounded online video-based piano lessons, emphasizing ear training, sight-reading, rhythm, technique, music theory, solfège, and improvisation.
  • Classics for Kids - Free weekly radio shows bring classical music's greatest composers to life through music and stories.
